My First Public Gallery: More Than Just an Exhibit

On October 5th, 2024, I hosted my first public gallery. But, true to form—just like every school project I ever did—I had to go a little overboard. I wanted this gallery to be more than just an exhibit; I wanted it to be an immersive experience for the community.

My painting Community Breakfast inspired me to include people in my art in a tangible way. Weeks before the event, I scoured thrift stores, raided my mom’s china cabinet, and collected dishware and tableware to bring the Community series to life. I carefully set a table where visitors could interact with mugs, cups, and silverware—fully immersing themselves in the scene. Even more exciting, they had the chance to be part of a future Community series painting by taking bird’s-eye view photos of their hands holding various items for me to use as reference images.

Beyond the gallery itself, painting live was an incredible experience. People got to see my process, ask questions, and connect through art. The best part? I even painted with some kiddos who told me they wanted to be artists—I let them add to my canvas. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do.

This gallery was a dream come to life, and I’m so grateful to everyone who showed up to support and participate. Thank you for being part of this journey! - J
