Community Breakfast - J Hart
"Community Breakfast" began in December 2023 as I processed my feelings after coming out as queer and non-binary. Growing up as number 5 of six kids, family breakfasts were rare, and the loss of family members who didn’t accept me weighed heavily on my heart. As I painted, I shifted my focus from loss to love, creating a scene that celebrates my chosen family I have found here in Portland.
This was my first time creating a painting this large, and it took a long time to get it looking how I wanted it to. This painting took me four months to complete.
The flowers on the table
are the flowers I had in my backyard growing up, my safe haven.
Hydrangeas and daffodils always make me think of my childhood home.
Peonies are my current favorite flower.
It is important to me to include
Black , Queer, and Trans representation
in this piece. I grew up seeing far too little
diversity represented in art and culture.
It’s about time we change that.
This piece transformed from a reflection of loneliness into a joyful celebration of connection, reminding me that chosen families are vital, especially in the queer community. "Community Breakfast" is now a testament to resilience, love, and the beautiful bonds we share.
“Please, find your seat at the table, all are welcome! I’m just so glad you’re here! ”
